Online
or phone counseling
“Sound
Biblical Counseling without the usual limitations of time and
distance.”
What is
Online Counseling?
· Online counseling is done face to face, in real time,
through the use of webcams. This gives the feel and effectiveness
of an in person counseling session in the convenience of your own
home or office
· Similar to in-person counseling, you will still set up an
individual appointment with your counselor. Sessions typically last
for 50 minutes but other lengths are available.
Advantages to online or phone counseling
-
Emotionally safe
– It is difficult to decide to enter into a counseling
relationship and face difficult issues. Some people find it
easier to take this step and to open up about their issues when
they are protected by the distance and anonymity provided by the
internet.
-
Anonymous
– One fear that keeps people from going to a counseling office
is that they may run into someone they know. Another fear is
seeing your counselor in another capacity such as a church event
or community gathering. These are not issues when engaging in
internet or phone counseling.
-
Convenient
–
You don’t have to travel to your appointments, saving you time
and money.
-
Comfortable
– You can engage in your counseling session from the comfort of
your own home.
-
Affordable
–
As our overhead is lower the fees for phone counseling are less
than an office session.
Disadvantages to online or phone counseling
-
Communication Difficulties –
Much of communication is non-verbal. Webcams allow for both the
counselee and the counselor to read non-verbal communication but
this is not a perfect representation of in person communication.
-
Trust –
Trust may be more easily gained with someone who is physically
present.
Limitations –
Counseling by internet or phone should not be a chosen mode of
treatment for those who are suicidal, homicidal or are suffering
from a severe emotional crisis.

How does online
counseling work?
· You must have a computer with internet access and a web
camera.
· Web cameras allow the client and counselor to see each
other.
· We use a video conference site called Skype.
What is Needed?
·
You must have internet access on your computer to be online for the
session.
· Get your free software from
www.skype.com.
You will download it to your computer.
· Some laptops and desktop computers have a built-in web
camera or you can purchase one at any store that sells computer
equipment.
An external web camera will plug into your computer's USB port.
Some computers may need a microphone for the audio.
·
You also need a quiet area where you will not be disturbed during
the counseling session.
That’s it. The call and video are free.
You can call yourself whatever you like when you set up your skype
account.

How to: Make Video Calls with Skype
By
James Maguire
March 17, 2009
Making a Skype video call is not only free but also remarkably easy.
If you’ve got an Internet connection and a Webcam, nothing stands in
your way.
But be warned: this means the age of video calling has arrived. When
a phone call means your caller sees you, it’s now rude to be doing
18 things as you talk. (And please, no personal hygiene
maintenance.)
If none of this deters you, here’s what you need:
• Download
Skype.
It’s free. Register as a user and create a user name.
Web Cam and Mic
• If you want to record your video call, download
Call Graph or
Pamela (for
Windows), or
Call
Recorder
(for Mac).
Now, turn on your Webcam and make sure your space is well lit. Boot
up Skype and click on the name of another registered Skype user
(you’ll need to add their user name before you call).
Once that person answers the call, click on the little video icon
near the bottom of the screen. Presto! You’ll see video of the
person and he’ll see video of you. (Have you brushed your teeth
recently?)

User tips for Skype video calling:
It’s natural to want to look at the video of the person you’re
calling, instead of looking into your Webcam’s eye. But only if you
look into the Webcam will it appear you are facing the viewer. One
solution: position Skype’s video screen as near to your Webcam’s eye
as possible, so you appear to be facing the Webcam.
Video Skype sucks up a lot of bandwidth. If you’re on a shaky
wireless connection your Skype connection might waver or drop. Shut
down everything else (such as your browser or your second computer)
that also hogs bandwidth.
In Skype, go to Preferences to change any parameters. For instance:
• You can make a video call using the “Picture in Picture” option
(like in the
sample video here) or “Side by Side.”
• If you’ve got the disk space, you can record at higher quality
settings, or capture a larger video picture with better audio.
• You can use your built-in Webcam, or connect a high-end video
camera.
Smile! You’re on camera!
